Monday 18th May

This week we are going to be learning about the life-cycle of the duck.  We are going to be finding out how a duck comes from an egg and then grows into a an adult duck.  Watch the story about ‘The Very Ugly Duckling’

Talk to a grown up about the story.  Why was the duckling feeling sad? How was he different from his brothers and sisters?   Can you draw your own duckling and label it e.g beak, wings, legs, feathers.  Write a sentence about your duckling.  You might want to describe what it looks like e.g The duckling has yellow feathers.  Don’t forget to use capital letters, finger spaces and a full stop at the end of your sentence.

Can you think of your own duckling themed math’s question.  For example, A duck lays 10 eggs, 3 of them hatch.  How many eggs are left over? Can you record your duckling story as a calculation e.g 10 – 3 = 7.  See if you can do 5 different duckling stories.  You could use objects to help work out the answers.

Log on to Oxford Owl and read the story ‘The King had a Wish’.  Look at the front cover, how do you know the man in the picture is a king? What clues are there? What do you think the kings wish is?  Begin to read the text, remembering to sound out any unknown words using your phonics knowledge.  Where do you think the king wants to go?  Is it possible to touch the moon? How do other people get to the moon.  When you have finished reading use the story map on page 16 to help you re tell the story in your own words.  Do you think the king hurt himself when he fell down?  What do you think the people thought of him?
