For most pupils, art is a natural form of expression and can bring great enjoyment. We encourage children to explore their creative and imaginative side through learning a variety of skills and techniques and using different tools and techniques. During their time at Boundary, children will be exposed to a range of art genres and different artists and they will have chance to practise different skills a number of times in order to ensure progression.

Intent
  • Engage, inspire and challenge children.
  • Teach the skills needed for the seven elements of art.
  • Allow children to explore, experiment and practise before creating a final piece.
  • Expose children to a variety of artists.
  • Give children the opportunity to explore different art mediums.
Implementation
  • In the EYFS children have access to a high-quality provision that allows them opportunities to explore a range of media and materials. They are taught skills and techniques through adult focused activities and can then practise these techniques independently.
  • Key stage 1 and 2 follow a teaching sequence of Explore, Experiment, Practise and Final piece.
  • During key stage 1 and lower key stage 2, children study two artists from a particular genre of art and practise their techniques in sketchbooks. Upper key stage 2 study three artists.
  • Children then have the freedom to create a final piece based on the skills they have practised.
  • During key stage 1, children develop a range of art and design techniques using the seven elements of art.
  • During key stage 2, children continue to develop these techniques adding more control.
Impact
  • Children will be able to talk about and use the seven elements of art.
  • Children will understand different types of art and the techniques used.
  • Children will be able to create individual pieces of art.
  • Children will be able to talk about different artists and their work.
  • Children will be able to evaluate their work.
